The Closet Turn: Sort by Role Before the Cold Arrives
Updated: Oct 17
The closet turn happens twice a year, and it goes faster when you decide by role instead of by feeling. The question is not whether you like the sweater. It is what job it does in your current life.
Signal. Worn this past season and still fits its role. It gets a home at the front.
Static. Kept for a version of life that is not happening. Release it with the route ready: a bag for donation, a listing, or the recycling drop.
Sentimental. Carries meaning, not function. Place it on purpose in a box, not on a hanger you have to look at every day.
How long it takes
Empty and sort one section at a time. A small closet takes 25 to 40 minutes. A full closet turn is better planned as two to four hours, and that is an estimate, since professional organizer sessions commonly run three to five hours on site.
Hold anything you cannot decide about in a Pending Node with a name, a container, and no deadline. Put a note on the calendar for spring and let it wait.
Reply and tell me: what is the hardest category in your closet to release?
